Draft Bill is being Prepared, DPR Proposes Expansion of West Papua Province

After ratifying three new provinces in Papua Province, the House of Representatives (DPR) is now proposing again to expand the territory for West Papua Province. The DPR proposed the establishment of the Province of South West Papua.

Deputy Chairman of the Legislation Agency (Baleg) of the DPR Achmad Baidowi said that currently the DPR has not been able to discuss the Bill for the Establishment of the Province of Southwest Papua. Because, his party is still waiting for the Presidential Letter (Surpres) along with the Problem Inventory List (DIM) of the expansion of the West Papua region from the government.

“Yes, we just have to wait for the President's Surpres, along with the DIM. From the DPR, the bill for the formation of Southwest Papua has become a proposed initiative bill and has been ratified in a plenary meeting, now it's just a matter of waiting for the Surpres," said Awiek, Achmad Baidowi's nickname to Kontan.co.id, Monday (25/7).
 
According to Awiek, the President is required to submit a presidential letter within 30 days of receiving the letter from the DPR.

After that, the DPR in this case is mandated to Commission II. The DPR will start conducting discussions with the government after the president's letter is received by the DPR.

Previously, the Bill for the Establishment of the Southwest Papua Province had also gone through a harmonization process at the Legislative Council of the Republic of Indonesia. In the Baleg meeting, all factions in the DPR, except the Democratic Party Faction, agreed to the results of the harmonization of the bill. Meanwhile, the Democratic Faction asked to be returned to the proposer to be refined.

Furthermore, the Bill for the Establishment of the Southwest Papua Province has also gone through a plenary meeting. In the plenary session, it was decided that the Bill on the Establishment of the Province of Southwest Papua became a bill on the initiative of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

As is known, in the DPR RI Plenary Meeting some time ago, the DPR has also approved 3 bills for the formation of a new province in Papua, namely the South Papua Province Bill, the Central Papua Province Bill, and the Mountain Papua Province Bill.
