Minister of Home Affairs: Three new autonomous regions in Papua were inaugurated at the end of October

Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said that three new autonomous regions in Papua, namely South Papua Province, Highlands Papua Province, and Central Papua Province, would soon be inaugurated at the end of October 2022.

“We will probably form it in late October or early November. The law already exists de jure. De facto not yet operational. The youngest one that is already operational is North Kalimantan,” said Tito Karnavian in Tanjung Selor, Tuesday.

Tito's presence in Tanjung Selor, Bulungan Regency as an inspector for the 10th Anniversary of Kaltara Province. Tito said the expansion of the three new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua was a priority, without “looking down at one eye” the proposals for new autonomous regions (DOB) from other regions in the country.

“For Papua, we know that there is security instability and development lagging. The spread of the area there is very high. So that the problem of the welfare of the Papuan people becomes very important. That's why the expansion was accelerated there," said Tito. Currently, according to the former National Police Chief, there are 324 lists of new autonomous regions proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Both provincial and district and city DOB proposals.

For information, the government has officially divided Papua into three provinces, namely Central Papua, Mountains Papua, and South Papua. This was after the DPR passed the Draft Law on the New Autonomous Region of Papua on June 30, 202. The law states that President Joko Widodo must appoint an acting governor until a definitive regional head election within six months after the law is passed.
