The Manokwari government strengthens rules for protecting children from violence

The Government of Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province, strengthened the rules to protect children from cases of violence by making a Draft Regional Regulation (Ranperda) for Child Friendly City which is currently still in the process of being discussed at the local DPRD.

Regent of Manokwari Hermus Indou in Manokwari, Tuesday, explained that the Ranperda for Child Friendly City is needed to protect the future of children from various cases of violence that occur in schools and at the same time build siding with children.

"But local governments and educational institutions, in this case schools, hope for parental support as the first educational institution in the family to participate in protecting children from the threat of violence," he said.
 
He said children are the government's heritage and wealth that needs to be protected because they will be the subject of regional development in the future.

Hermus emphasized that the local government is consistent in not tolerating cases of violence against children, especially if they occur in the school environment.

The perpetrators of violence against children, both physical violence and violence of a sexual nature, must be punished according to the applicable rules given the existence of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection.
 
In addition to strengthening the rules, he ensures that campaigns or movements to protect children from threats of violence that occur in the community continue to be improved through socialization at the village and sub-district levels, including in urban areas.

Thus, Hermus hopes, the safety and future of the children can be protected.

"For this issue of child protection, we hope that all parties work together to prevent violence against children. The government will also invite civil society organizations to campaign against violence against children," he said.
