528 Papuan Students Drop Out Scholarship Recipients, 271 Expelled from Campuses Overseas

A total of 528 students receiving scholarships from the Provincial Government of Papua experienced dropping out or termination of their study relationship.

The number of students from Papua who have been cut off from various campuses has been counted since the scholarship program was launched in 2009.

Head of the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) Papua, Aryoko AF Rumaropen said the termination of the study relationship was due to various reasons.

"Such as low academic scores, overdue study periods and violations of higher education regulations," said Rumaropen to Tribun-Papua.com, in Jayapura, Wednesday (21/12/2022).

As many as 271 people among the hundreds of Papuan students who dropped out were studying abroad.

Meanwhile, the remaining 257 people dropped out of universities in the country.

"They (students) go home with an academic evaluation, such as grades that do not meet the requirements, then the deadline for studying," he said.

According to Rumaropen, there were some students who were expelled due to legal issues.

"Generally it is caused by two factors, namely the problem of achieving academic grades or the length of study and the problem of violating the rules."

“The first is academic, and the second is a violation of the law. It could be on campus, for example in the campus dormitory he doesn't allow getting drunk," he explained.

The violation is outside the authority of the BPSDM as the scholarship provider.

"That's a campus rule. Then, regarding legal issues, for example in Canada there is a student who allegedly shot the police, that's a violation of law abroad."

"There are conditions, you have to be disciplined. If there is a violation of the law, it will not be tolerated by a state that is orderly and lawful," explained Rumaropen.

He said, every student receiving a Papua scholarship must comply with the provisions that apply in tertiary institutions.

Rumaropen emphasized that students receiving Papuan scholarships must also complete their studies before the specified deadline.

"For example, scholarship recipients who study abroad must be able to finish their studies within six years."

"While domestic scholarship recipients must complete their studies in five years," he said.

If a student is sent home due to academic problems before the scholarship award deadline ends, BPSDM Papua will find a campus according to the student's major.

Then continue the scholarship program.

"However, students who are sent home after the deadline for granting scholarships ends will not receive scholarships again," he emphasized.
